"Ambitious" Is Not a Dirty Word

Let’s talk double-standards in the work place.

Have you ever noticed that when professional women are described as AMBITIOUS or CONFIDENT or COMPETITIVE, those terms are generally used in a derogatory way?

💥 “She's too ASSERTIVE.”

💥 “She's too AGGRESSIVE.”

And if you happen to be a woman who is ambitious or competitive or aggressive in the workplace, you're oftentimes labeled a “bitch.”

Notice, too, that we don't do the same with men. We applaud their ambition and their competitive nature. We expect them to be assertive and confident and aggressive.

🛑 It's time to ditch the double-standard.

I mean, instead of let’s celebrate women who are:

  • AMBITIOUS: having a strong desire to succeed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • CONFIDENT: feeling or showing confidence in oneself and abilities; self-assured.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • ASSERTIVE: having or showing a confident and forceful personality.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • COMPETITIVE: relating to or characterized by competition; the desire to strive to gain or win.⠀⠀⠀
  • AGGRESSIVE: ready or likely to confront⠀⠀⠀
  • CAPABLE: having the ability, fitness or quality necessary to do or achieve a specified thing.⠀⠀

We need to normalize describing women in these terms — and meaning them as compliments.⠀⠀⠀

It's time to value those characteristics in women just like we value them in men.

And for all of you ambitious, confident, competitive and assertive women out there:

👊Keep showing up!

👊 Keep advocating on behalf of yourself, your clients, your family, your community.

👊 Keep doing the good work.

The world needs your fire. 🔥
